BANGOR – Girl Scouts of Maine has received a $1,250 matching grant from the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf for the Girls Golf Program of Greater Bangor.
This award, funded by the USGA and administered by LPGA and USGA, will help expand the scope of the program and make financial assistance available for girls. It also provides funds for equipment and professional instruction, and allows registration fees to be kept low for all participants.
The Girls Golf Program, sponsored locally by Girl Scouts of Maine, began in the Bangor area in 2002 and has encouraged girls to learn a sport that gives them a lifelong physical and social activity as well as opportunities to play on high school and college teams.
“We are so fortunate to have Thea Davis, golf professional at the Hermon Meadow Golf Club; Lori Frost, golf professional at the Penobscot Valley Country Club; and Martha White, 13-time WMSGA Champion, as instructors for this program,” said Joan McDonald CEO of Girl Scouts of Maine. “Golf not only gets girls into the out of doors and provides good physical activity, it provides them with a skill that will serve them well as adults, both socially and in the business world.”
Cathy Wiley, site director of Girls Golf in Bangor, hopes to expand the program next season.
“With the success of the Bangor program, we hope to offer these same opportunities to more girls in other areas of the council,” Willey commented.
