Hollywood Slots to open 3 floors of hotel next week

BANGOR – By the middle of next week, Hollywood Slots Hotel and Raceway will be able to fully live up to its name.

Most of the company’s $132 million gaming and entertainment complex, namely its gaming floor with 1,000 slots, lounge, buffet, snack bar, conference facilities and parking garage, opened on July 1.

The opening of its seven-story hotel, however, was delayed due to the long lead times required for ordering some of the hotel’s construction material.

The hotel, which includes a business center and a fitness center, among other things, is scheduled to open in two stages, according to Hollywood Slots spokeswoman Amy Kenney.

Levels two through four of the hotel will open next Wednesday, two days before the kickoff of the American Folk Festival, which will take place a few blocks down Main Street at Bangor Waterfront, Kenney said.

The remaining levels, five through seven, are slated to open early next month, she said.

The hotel will have 152 rooms, four of them double-size penthouse suites. Many of the rooms will offer views of the Penobscot River and the Bangor-Brewer skyline.

General Manager Jon Johnson said in May that rooms overlooking the Penobscot River will cost about $20 more a night, and that rates for typical rooms will be seasonally adjusted, ranging from about $99 to $169 per night.

Though some rooms already have been reserved, a limited number remain available for festival weekend, Kenney said.

“Things are cooking right along. We’re all staffed up and the employees can’t wait [for the hotel to open],” Kenney said, adding that she and other staff members are taking turns staying in the rooms as sort of a dress rehearsal so they work any bugs out before guests arrive.

“We are our toughest critics,” she said. “I’m going to be worse than a normal tourist.”
