Crocker Memorial 5K Run
DIXMONT – The second annual Gary S. Crocker Memorial 5K Run and Walk is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 14, and will benefit the Dixmont Scholarship Association.
The race, which began in 2007 during the Dixmont Bicentennial, is held in honor of Gary S. Crocker, a community member and strong supporter of local agriculture and farming, who passed away last summer.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. and race time is 9 a.m. sharp on the Cottrell Road in Dixmont. The 5K event will issue prizes in the men’s and women’s divisions. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for youths, including a commemorative T-shirt.
The association and race committee are seeking sponsors for the race T-shirts. Gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($20) categories are available, and sponsors will be featured on the back of the shirts.
The Dixmont Scholarship Association awards scholarships annually to Dixmont high school seniors.
Enter Cottrell Road from Route 143, Simpson Corner Road, about 1.5 miles north of the intersection of Routes 9 and 143. Follow Cottrell Road to the bend, where the registration table and start of the race will be held, rain or shine.

Wetlands benefit dinner
BANGOR – The DownEast Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will present its 37th fundraising banquet and auction at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at the Bangor Banquet and Conference Center, 713 Hogan Road. The event will raise funds to support wetlands conservation for Maine and North America.

Live and silent auctions will offer limited edition wildlife prints, decoys, guns, knives, jewelry, select furniture, hunting equipment and apparel, and much more. The evening also will feature several raffles.
Ducks Unlimited conserves, restores and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people.
Since its founding in 1937, the organization has raised more than $2.5 billion, which has contributed to the conservation of more than 11.9 million acres of wildlife habitat in all 50 states, each of the Canadian provinces and in key areas of Mexico.

Annual golf tournament
ORRINGTON – The fifth annual golf tournament, hosted by the Manly Men’s Group of East Orrington Congregational Church, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Rocky Knoll Golf Course.
The $55 fee covers 18 holes of golf, a golf cart and a “fabulous meal.” The Long Drive Contest offers $10,000 for a hole in one.
Other prizes include a Bose radio system, Dell computer and a set of golf clubs.

Soccer program
ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its fall soccer program, beginning Saturday, Sept. 20.
There will be a preseason clinic Saturday, Sept. 13, conducted by British Soccer.
This program is open to all children in kindergarten through grade six. The fee is $25 for Orono residents and $35 for others who register by Friday, Sept. 5. Add $10 for registration after Sept. 5.
The Recreation Department also is looking for volunteer coaches and referees.

Horseshoe tournament
HUDSON – The Pushaw Lake Snowmobile Club will hold its second horseshoe tournament 11 a.m.-11:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at its clubhouse on Whitmore Landing Road.

Girls soccer alumnae game
BANGOR – The second annual Bangor High School girls soccer alumnae game, BHS varsity team vs. BHS alumnae, will be played at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the Bangor High School soccer field, 885 Broadway.
The game was established in memory of Danielle Marie Thompson, Class of 2003, who died in January 2007 after a brief illness while a senior at the University of New Hampshire. At BHS, Thompson was a four-year member and captain of the varsity girls soccer squad.
Admission to the game is free, but donations will benefit the Danielle Marie Thompson Scholarship Fund.
Concessions will be available 5-9 p.m. and raffle prizes will be awarded. A silent auction also will be conducted.
Alumnae who wish to participate must register right away. The $20 registration fee, including a T-shirt, will benefit the scholarship fund.

Family canoe trip
HOLDEN – Take to the water on a family canoe trip 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Fields Pond. The trek is sponsored by the Fields Pond Audubon Center. The cost of canoe rental is $5, $10 family, or bring your own canoe and equipment.
Meet at the center, then take to the lake for possible sightings of eagles, ospreys, loons and other wildlife.
