BANGOR – The Pearl City Senior League All-Stars were primed for defeat.

Less than two hours earlier they suffered a 2-1 loss to Canada that knocked the Hawaiians out of contention for the Senior League World Series title.

Then, using a makeshift lineup featuring six players who did not start in the earlier contest, they fell behind Bangor 5-0 in the first inning of their final game of Pool A play Thursday.

But the U.S. West representatives regrouped quickly, scoring 13 unanswered runs en route to a 13-6 victory over the host Maine District 3 champions at Mansfield Stadium.

“Since we lost we just went out there to have fun,” said Pearl City center fielder Jordan Oshiro. “Coach let everybody play, so all we did was our best.”

Oshiro was the game’s dominant player, amassing four singles, three RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

“Actually I was seeing the ball pretty well in this game, and the hits came to me,” said Oshiro, whose team finished with a 2-2 record.

Bangor ended its stay in the SLWS at a deceptive 1-3 – deceptive given that manager Ron St. Pierre’s team led in all four of its games and played tight contests against both teams that will represent Pool A in Friday’s semifinals.

“We came here wanting to win, but at the same time everybody got to hit in a World Series, everybody got to play,” said St. Pierre. “It’s the first time I’ve seen kids hug me after a game, it was very emotional. This is a great group. They’re going to win at the high school if they hold it together.”

Bangor offered early hope of being the first Maine team to win two games in an SLWS since the event moved to the Queen City in 2002 by sending 10 batters to plate in the first inning against Pearl City.

Nate Lewis and Tyler Desjardins got the uprising going with back-to-back one out doubles to produce a run. Devin Lyshon was hit by a Brandon Shin pitch, and Cody McInnis singled to load the bases.

A fielder’s choice by Kyle Savage drove home Desjardins, and after Ryan Larochelle walked to reload the bases, younger brother Jacques Larochelle hit an RBI single and John Kelley drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0.

Savage, the Bangor starter, then held Pearl City scoreless in the bottom of the inning – and the rout seemingly had begun.

Only Pearl City had other ideas.

“They were down, but a lot of the players were the reserves so they had a little bit more pep inside and wanted to prove something to themselves,” said Hawaiian manager Kyle Nakata.

Kainalu Chmolack’s RBI double got Pearl City on the board in the second and an RBI single by Kahana Neal and a sacrifice fly by Edwinb Izumigaloa cut the gap to 5-3 in the third.

The U.S. West champs then batted around in each of the next two innings, scoring four runs in the fourth and six runs in the fifth.

Oshiro had a two-run single while Brysen Honda and Neal also singled home runs in the fourth. Honda added a two-run single in the fifth.

“We got off to a good start, but as you know Hawaii can always come back,” said St. Pierre. “We had a chance to win a game if our pitching held up, but unbeknownst to me Kyle was having a problem with his elbow. That’s why I went out two or three times, but he insisted on staying in.”

Bangor’s final run came in the sixth when Lonnie Hackett led off with an infield hit and came around to score on a two-out single by Cody McInnis.
