BREWER – A disabled railroad locomotive kept Brewer police and firefighters busy directing traffic for about an hour and a half Sunday night. The Springfield Terminal train came to a stop shortly after 7 p.m. just after clearing the State Street intersection at the eastern end of the Penobscot Bridge. Railroad crossings at Wilson Street, Parker Street and Center Street were blocked by freight cars.
According to Cpl. Levi Sewall of the Brewer Police Department, four police officers, several firefighters and some railroad employees joined forces to redirect traffic and keep vehicles moving safely through the intersection of State and North Main streets, where the traffic signal was jammed because of the train’s presence. The incident was resolved at about 8:30 p.m. when the locomotive resumed operation.
