Just in time to get that new look for school, Lorraine Colpitts announces a Locks of Love fundraiser from 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Aug. 23, at Spectacular Event Center on Griffin Road in Bangor.
Sponsored by Safe and Sound Youth Transportation of Brewer, “with Spectacular Event donating all the food,” and Robin Lozier of Safe and Sound and Spectacular Event “coordinating the huge silent auction,” Colpitts wrote, the event will be conducted on a “first-come, first-served basis.”
All haircuts, and the silent auction, will end at 8 p.m., in time for everyone to “enjoy the DJ entertainment as well as other random prize drawings throughout the event,” Colpitts wrote.
Admission to the event is a Locks of Love ponytail at least 6 inches long, in healthy condition brought to the event, “or we will cut it for you,” Colpitts wrote; volunteering at the event; or a $10 donation. Proceeds benefit Locks of Love, which “creates the hairpieces for children suffering from hair loss due to illness or disease,” Colpitts wrote.
Considering the success of last year’s event, which produced 240 Locks of Love and raised $3,200 for the Florida-based Locks of Love organization, Colpitts was very pleased with the response. She wrote the event was “pretty amazing. Let’s do it again!”
Colpitts added that organizers are still seeking hairdressers for two-hour shifts, and you can receive more information by calling 866-990-1900, 989-4200, 949-1723 or faxing 989-2100.
Sue McKay reminds readers the historic Bangor Band is performing at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Riverfront Park in Old Town.

If it rains, the concert will be held at Sargent Community Center on Bennoch Road.

Nan Cobbey of the Belfast Garden Club wrote that new gardeners who are interested in raising their own vegetables and fruits may want to attend the next BGC Open Garden Day, which is 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the garden of David Cassida, 268 Northport Ave. in Belfast.
The suggested donation of $3 benefits BGC civic projects. A list of gardens and directions is available at local businesses, at www.belfastgardenclub.org or inside the birdhouse at Post Office Square in Belfast.
Cobbey wrote that Cassida has been gardening for nearly 50 years and raises most of his plants from seed. His garden includes “beds of greens, herbs, vegetables, flowers and fruit trees,” and he sells some produce at a farm stand.
The summer-long garden tours are all the same time, the same admission and are all on Fridays, Cobbey reminds readers, and the final garden tour is Sept. 19.
