BANGOR – St. Joseph Hospice is looking for new volunteers to provide nonmedical support to hospice patients and their caregivers. Volunteers are people of all ages, faiths and walks of life who serve two to four hours each week, depending on their availability. They offer companionship to hospice patients by simply talking to them, playing games, reading or playing music. Hospice volunteers also provide respite to patients’ family and other caregivers so they can run errands or rest. And when a patient dies, volunteers stay in touch with the families to offer grief and bereavement support. Training sessions for new hospice volunteers begins Sept. 13. Advance registration by Sept. 5 is appreciated. For more information or to register, call Jane Folsom at 262-1810.
