ELLSWORTH – Ellsworth Police and Fire departments closed a portion of Route 1A Monday afternoon after an estimated 250 pounds of blueberries spilled into the road.
“It was a mess,” said Ellsworth police Officer Chad Wilmot, who went to the accident scene. “Obviously, quite a few had been run over by the time we got there.”
Ten to 12 crates each containing 25 pounds of blueberries fell off a pickup truck as it was being driven down the road, covering a 100-foot stretch of Route 1A near Shore Road, according to Wilmot.
Police shut down the northbound lane and redirected southbound traffic down Shore Road for 20 minutes while the Ellsworth Fire Department hosed the blueberries off the road.
“It was pretty slippery and could have been a potential safety hazard,” said Ellsworth Fire Department Capt. Mike Hangge.
Police have no information regarding the owner of the blueberries.
