Ex-officer won’t face felony assault charges

PORTLAND – Felony charges have been dropped against a former Portland police officer who was arrested in March after an alleged assault on his wife at their Westbrook home.

Brian Regan, 39, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one misdemeanor assault charge, but that charge will dropped in nine months if Regan obeys conditions handed down by Superior Court Justice Robert Crowley.

Assistant District Attorney Anne Berlind said the felony charges were dropped because Regan’s wife did not want to put herself or her children through the stress of a trial. Berlind said the Regans are getting divorced and that Heidi Regan plans to move out of the area.

Regan’s attorney said his client, who was fired from the Police Department in May, is seeking reinstatement to the force.
