PORTLAND – A 46-year-old Palmyra man who confessed to a 1995 killing in Portland will remain in jail after his initial court appearance on a murder charge.
Steven Cutting appeared Tuesday in Cumberland County Superior Court, where he entered no plea in the murder of 36-year-old William Greenwood.
After his arrest, Cutting told a TV reporter he picked up Greenwood hitchhiking on the night of April 30, 1995, and shot him later after they got into a fight as Cutting was driving Greenwood to his home in Westbrook.
Cutting kept his involvement in the killing a secret for 13 years, but confessed over the weekend to a relative, who then told police.
Prosecutors have asked that no bail be set.
