Police doughnut contest raising funds for charity

ROCKLAND – Area law enforcement officers kicked off their campaign at Tim Hortons on Tuesday to promote a charity event to raise money for Special Olympics of Maine.

Officer Troy Peasley of the Rockland Police Department, who is coordinating the event, said the officers would meet at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Tim Hortons for a doughnut-eating competition.

“Customers can make donations to the Special Olympics of Maine for the police officer they think will win,” said Peasley. “The first officer to eat six doughnuts the fastest will be victorious.”

As the officers stood to have a photograph taken Tuesday, they bantered about “sizing up their competition.”

Tim Hortons will donate the doughnuts.

The tentative lineup of participating officers includes Chief Bruce Boucher, Rockland Police Department; Lt. Joseph Kieras, Knox County Sheriff’s Office; Officer Craig Cooley, Rockport Police Department; Chief Kevin Haj, Thomaston Police Department; Lt. Randy Gagne, Camden Police Department; and Lt. Gerard Madden, State Police Troop D.

“The police regularly do something for the Special Olympics,” said Boucher at the launching.
