BANGOR – Police officers responded quickly to the report of an armed man who apparently injured a person Wednesday evening in a Curve Street apartment. Within an hour police had a suspect in custody.

“Patrol responded to a report of a man with a gun at 69 Curve St. at 8:49 p.m.,” Sgt. Cathy Rumsey said. “There are conflicting reports of whether or not [a weapon was discharged].”

The man was taken into custody at around 10 p.m. but because he had not been charged as of 11 p.m., his name was not released. Police were able to say he is a Bangor resident and doesn’t live on Curve Street.

The investigation is now in the hands of the criminal investigation division, Rumsey said.

The victim was treated by ambulance personnel at the scene and was not taken to the hospital.

More than 10 police cruisers, two from the Maine State Police and at least one from Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department, could be seen at 9 p.m. converging at the junction of Market and Cumberland streets, blocking off access to nearby Curve Street. Officers collected information and then drove off, apparently searching for the suspect.

Two officers on bicycles could be seen taking the names of people walking by.

One local man on a bike, who asked not to be identified, said the police wanted to know his name, date of birth, address and if he “had seen a man in a dark T-shirt running away.”

“Another officer told me there was a shooting,” he said.

He said he didn’t want to be identified, because he was afraid of becoming a victim of the shooter.

Rumsey couldn’t say whether the man caught was apprehended with a weapon.

More information about the case is expected to be released today, Rumsey said.
