Former teacher found guilty of molestation

AUBURN – A former Auburn elementary school teacher accused of molesting and assaulting pupils was found guilty Thursday on all five counts against him.

The Androscoggin County Superior Court jury deliberated for nearly four hours over two days before returning its verdict against 27-year-old James Raymond Jr.

Raymond was charged with two counts of unlawful sexual touching and three counts of assault involving former students.

The former music teacher, who has been under house arrest while awaiting trial, testified Wednesday that he was innocent. He said he confessed to touching his students in order to cut short a police interview in which he felt intimidated.

During the trial, which began Tuesday, three girls testified that Raymond touched them inappropriately.

According to testimony, Raymond slid his hand up the skirt of a second-grader during music class and touched the buttocks of a first-grader. A third victim, now 14, said Raymond touched her leg from her ankle to her knee during a school talent show when he dropped a piece of a camera on the floor and reached under a table to retrieve it.

Raymond’s lawyer, Walter McKee, questioned the credibility of the girls. He said the allegations took place when other people were present, but that nobody backed up the girls’ testimony.

Raymond will remain under house arrest until his sentencing Oct. 15.

He is prohibited from interacting with children other than direct family members and from using a computer. During his trial, Raymond admitted to subscribing to child pornography Web sites, but said he stopped using them before it became an addiction.
