Historical society honors schoolhouse

BELMONT – The Greene Plantation Historical Society invites former students, their families and friends to attend a Remembrance Day open house at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. The event is being held at Greer’s Corner Schoolhouse on the corner of Lincolnville and Back Belmont roads.

The event at the former one-room schoolhouse will mark its 100th birthday. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is believed to be the only building in Belmont to be registered with the National Park Service as a historic building.

The historical society is collecting names and addresses of former students to contact. They are also asking that people who have photos of former students, of the schoolhouse or memorabilia and photos of old Belmont to make them available.

The society welcomes donations to help with restoration projects and for a permanent historical site for historical research, genealogies and artifacts. For a $35 or more donation, contributors will receive a poster-size copy of the 1859 map of Belmont in original color. Those with names and addresses of former students should contact Isabel Morse Maresh at mareshme@fairpoint.net.
