Community fish plan expanding to MDI

BAR HARBOR – A community supported fish program is expanding to include customers in the Mount Desert Island area, according to organizers.

Similar to community supported agriculture programs, the program on Mount Desert Island will provide food to paying subscribers who sign up for the service. The difference is that this program, arranged by the Maine Fishermen’s Association and the MDI Co-op Buying Club, will involve seafood from Port Clyde Fresh Catch rather than farm vegetables, eggs and meats.

A full share of the CSF program on MDI costs $180 for about 8 to 12 pounds of gutted, unfilleted fish per week for six weeks. A half share is $90 for between 4 and 6 pounds of gutted, unfilleted fish per week for the same time period.

Shares will be available for pickup at West Eden Common on Route 102 in the village of Town Hill from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays between Aug. 27 and Oct. 1. Flounder, gray sole, haddock, hake and pollock are among the types of fish that will be included in the program. All fish will be delivered on ice.

A free demonstration on how to fillet fish will be offered at the first CSF pickup on Aug. 27.
