County towns plan prescription disposals

HOULTON – Prescription drug return events are planned this fall in Aroostook County to coincide with the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.

One collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Pine Tree Waste on Florence Avenue in Houlton. The drop-off is free and no pre-registration for the medications is required. All you have to do on the day of the event is bring medications in their original containers and pass them to volunteers who will give them to a pharmacist to sort into controlled and uncontrolled medications. The two medications will be separated and prepared for proper disposal.

A short survey will be conducted by the volunteers asking where you heard about the event and your ZIP code. You will not even have to get out of your car.

From now until Thursday, Sept. 4, area residents of Fort Kent and Madawaska may drop off prescription medication to their police departments between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Partners participating in this initiative are: Mid Coast Hospital, Department of Environmental Protection, The Aroostook Medical Center, Houlton Regional Hospital, Cary Medical Center, Northern Maine Medical Center, Aroostook Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, Aroostook County Chiefs of Police Association, Aroostook County District Attorney, Tri-Community Landfill, Pine Tree Waste Houlton, Presque Isle Solid Waste, Northern Maine Development Commission, the county of Aroostook and the Maine Department of Agriculture.
