Get your degree at Fiber College

It’s time to go back to school – Fiber College, that is – where “students” can “major” in knitting, felting, weaving, embroidery, spinning, quilting, basket making, rug hooking and related arts. Fiber College convenes Thursday, Sept. 4, through Sunday, Sept. 7, at Searsport Shores Ocean Camping, Route 1, in Searsport. Besides a dizzying array of classes, ranging in cost from $10 to $65, the event will offer demonstrations, a shopper’s boulevard with vendors from throughout Maine and as far away as New York and Massachusetts, fiber animals and meals.

Quiltmaker and author Mary Ellen Krantz will serve as artist in residence at the event. Krantz is the co-author of “Blending Photos with Fabric.”

A potluck supper and fiber swap will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5. A lasagna dinner and lecture by a fiber artist is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

. Linda Murray of the Blue Marble Gallery, 165 Main St., Waterville, reports that 230 images from more than 150 people were submitted for the gallery’s “Soul Quilt” exhibit, part of the gallery’s “Out of Stillness” exhibit, now on display. Artists and nonartists were asked to submit 6-inch-by-6-inch pieces that best reflected their effort to remain “in the now” at the time it was created. Pieces were created by those of all ages and all walks of life.

The “Soul Quilt” collaborative project was inspired by the concept of “being in the now” as found in the teachers of Eckhart Tolle.

Each image in the “Soul Quilt” may be purchased for $20 with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Fresh Water Arts Scholarship Fund. Fresh Water Arts is a nonprofit organization in Waterville that teaches art to children and adults.

For more information, call the gallery at 873-2300.
