Sanford airport expansion plans dead

SANFORD – A Maine company’s plans for a $10 million expansion at Sanford Regional Airport have been derailed after financial backing fell through.

Oxford Aviation had planned to open a 96,000-square-foot airplane-refurbishing facility at the airport with up to 200 jobs. The company, based in the western Maine town of Oxford, provides custom painting, interior refurbishment and alterations on private and business aircraft.

It had hoped to expand at the Sanford airport in part because its 6,000-foot landing strip could accommodate larger planes that can’t land in Oxford.

When the expansion plans were announced in 2006, Gov. John Baldacci attended a mock groundbreaking ceremony.
