DOVER-FOXCROFT – Little comment was provided Tuesday during a public hearing on a grant seeking funds to purchase property for trailhead access in Moosehead Junction Township.
Ken Woodbury, Piscataquis County Economic Development Council community development specialist, wrote the grant which seeks $25,000 from the Land and Water Conservation Trust of the Department of Conservation to help with the purchase of about 2 acres on Depot Street.
The county has an option on the $65,000 property which consists of the old railroad roundtable and is located next to a laundromat. Another $1,000 would be needed to clear the property of brush and to make improvements, according to Woodbury.
“The way the grant is written, the county would be putting in $25,000 and the rest would come from other sources; however, the county is free to go to any public or private sources to pay for all costs,” Woodbury said. No county funds will be used for its purchase, he said.
Woodbury said the economic development group will be searching for other grants for the purchase of the property which will be used as a parking area for boat, snowmobile and all-terrain trailers.
