CARIBOU – An anonymous tip led to the seizure of 40 marijuana plants Wednesday by Caribou police and the U.S. Border Patrol.

Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan said the plants ranged in size from 3 to 7 feet tall with an estimated street value of $1,000 per plant.

“Evidence was taken at the scene and the plants were eradicated,” Gahagan said.

Based on the tip as well as observations by the Border Patrol from a helicopter, officers used all-terrain vehicles and a Border Patrol dog unit to find the grove, which was about 100 yards off the ATV trail near East Presque Isle Road.

“The plants were in amongst some trees [and] we don’t believe the landowners knew it was growing there,” Gahagan said. He said the plants were “well tended” and protected by a fence.

“We appreciate information like this,” Gahagan said. “If any landowner comes across something growing on his land [and] they don’t know what it is, we are interested in hearing about it.”

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday afternoon.
