HOLDEN – Kathryn Olmstead of Orono will present “Polar Bears in Manitoba: A Photo Journey” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Fields Pond Audubon Center, 216 Fields Pond Road. The cost is $5 for Maine Audubon members, $6 others.

Every fall, more than 1,000 polar bears pass through Churchill, Manitoba, during their annual migration to hunt for food on the pack ice of Hudson Bay.

As a member of a Maine Audubon polar bear adventure in November 2007, Olmstead saw the bears in their natural habitat as they waited for the ice to freeze.

In addition to taking photos, she brought back a deepened awareness of the effects of climate change on the survival of the polar bear. Her presentation will take viewers out on the tundra to share her observations and insights.
