Winterport woman injured after 2 crashes

WINTERPORT – A local woman was taken by helicopter to a Portland hospital Wednesday after she first was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Main Street, then crashed her car into a home in Frankfort a few minutes later.

Elaine P. Dahl, 61, of Upper Oak Point suffered head and facial injuries as a result of the crash into the house. She was taken by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital and then transferred to Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight.

Waldo County Chief Deputy Robert Keating said the first accident was reported at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday by Stephen T. Preston, 47, of Main Street. Preston told police that a tan-colored car had just crashed into the back of his 1996 Ford pickup truck as he was slowing to turn into his driveway. The car drove off, Preston reported.

Nine minutes later at 11:54 p.m., the county dispatch center received a report of a tan-colored car crashing into a house on Loggin Road in Frankfort.

According to the accident report filed by Deputies Merl Reed and Kevin Littlefield, witnesses saw the car weaving from one side of the road to another before the crash. At one point the car crossed to the opposite lane, left the road, then shot back across the road into a ditch and bog, accelerated out of the bog and traveled 500 feet across a field before crashing into a corner of the house. The 2004 Lexus station wagon was totaled, and damage to the porch and the home was extensive, Keating said.

“We believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident,” Keating said Thursday. “The accident is still under investigation.”
