Dye study slated for Presumpscot River

WESTBROOK – Environmental officials say people shouldn’t be alarmed if they see the Presumpscot River turn red next week.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection will conduct a dye tracing study on the river on Tuesday.

Dyes will be released into the river in Westbrook to track the river’s flow and water dispersion to where it flows into the tidal waters of Casco Bay.

Officials say portions of the river may turn reddish in color for a brief time, but that the dye is not harmful to people or the environment.
