SOUTH BERWICK – The University of Maine and University of Massachusetts women’s soccer teams battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie Friday. The Bears and Minutemen spent most of the day in the midfield area with both defenses not allowing many scoring opportunities.

SOUTH BERWICK – The University of Maine and University of Massachusetts women’s soccer teams battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie Friday.

The Bears and Minutemen spent most of the day in the midfield area with both defenses not allowing many scoring opportunities.

UMaine attacking midfielder Kim Stephenson was able to get a couple of shots off, but even those were from beyond 25 yards.

Jasmine Phillips made four saves for the 1-0-1 Black Bears on six UMass shots.

Lauren Luckey made seven saves on eight shots for the 0-1-1 Minutemen.

Men’s soccer

Wheaton 3, Husson 0

At Norton, Mass., Wheaton College scored three first-half goals within a 15-minute, 4-second span of the first half to win its home opener for the 18th consecutive year.

Yuri Moreira scored twice for the 1-0 Lyons and David Ferriero added one goal, while Josh Solomon had two assists and Pablo Mena added one assist.

Cole Davidson and Chris Smart combined to make two saves on seven Husson shots. Miguel Dominguez made nine saves on 25 shots for 0-1 Husson.

Rhode Island 2, Maine 1

At Durham, N.H., the Black Bears took a 1-0 lead, but the URI Rams scored twice midway though the second half to notch the victory.

Josh Sousa and Dwayne Williams each scored a goal for the Rams. Gary Crooks assisted on Williams’ game-winner. Chris Pennock made five saves.

Nikola Bogdanovic scored the goal for the 0-1 Black Bears with a little less than 20 minutes left in the first half. Goalie Nemanja Kostic made seven saves.

The Black Bears outshot the Rams 14-12 in the game.
