BANGOR – The search for a missing Bangor girl ended about 7 a.m. Saturday when she walked into the police station with friends of her parents, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

The adult family friends told police they didn’t know that 9-year-old Haley Stratton had been reported missing after she last was seen around 4 p.m. Friday near her Clinton Street home. It was unclear how Stratton ended up with the family friends, Edwards said.

Haley is the daughter of Michael and Carmen Stratton of 20 Clinton St.

The girl was not injured in any way and no charges are pending in the case, but the Maine Department of Health and Human Services is looking into the incident, Edwards said.

“She was safe,” he added.

When Haley initially was reported missing, Bangor police contacted the Fort Lauderdale-based organization A Child Is Missing.

According to Sgt. Paul Kenison of the Bangor Police Department, the organization sent recorded phone messages at about 6 p.m. to approximately 2,000 households in the area around the Stratton home, describing the child and asking anyone with information to contact the department.

The message inaccurately called her Kaleigh, but police verified that her name is Haley.

When the initial round of calls failed to yield helpful information, a second round was sent at about 9:45 p.m. to more homes in a larger area, Kenison said.

Police offered no new details Sunday, saying the case was still under investigation.
