Husson women record two wins

BANGOR – Samantha Homer scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway with 2:30 remaining in overtime to lift the Husson University women’s soccer team past Westfield State 2-1 in the Husson University Classic on Sunday.

Husson defeated the University of Quebec-Trois Rivieres 4-2 on Saturday.

In Saturday’s game, Homer netted two goals to lead Husson to victory. Shelby Bradford and Megan LaJoie each added a goal. Tatyana Wolterbeek stopped six of 16 shots for the Eagles.

Quebec-Trois Rivieres scored two goals late in the game.

In Sunday’s game, Bradford tied the game for Husson with 11:10 left in regulation. Wolterbeek made eight saves on 19 shots for the 2-0 Eagles.

Westfield State scored a goal in the second half and outshot Husson 19-4.

Wheaton 4, Saint Joseph’s 0

At Norton, Mass., Wheaton College defeated Saint Joseph’s College of Standish on Sunday to extend its regular-season unbeaten streak to 36 games.

Jessica Bramucci netted two goals to lead Wheaton. Kasey Frasier stopped the only shot she faced for the 2-0 Lyons.

Katye Mayo made 11 saves on 36 shots for the Monks.

Maine 1, Rhode Island 1 (2OT)

At Orono, Carolyne Nellis netted a goal for Maine with 10:08 left in regulation Sunday as the Black Bears battled to a tie with the University of Rhode Island through two overtimes.

Kim Stephenson tallied the assist on Nellis’ goal. Jasmine Phillips made four saves on 11 shots for the 1-0-2 Black Bears.

Jackie Fede stopped seven of nine shots for 0-2-1 URI.

U-New England 5, MMA 1

At Biddeford, the University of New England received goals from five different players to open the season with a victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday.

Kristin Meza, Sam Reid, Katie Caron, Ali Trafton and Sarah Richardson each posted a goal for the Nor’easters.

Katie Hutchinson scored for MMA in the 24th minute. Lacey Jackson made seven stops for the Lady Mariners of Castine.

USM 10, SUNY Maritime 0

At Gorham, Caitlin Brown scored three goals as the University of Southern Maine shut out SUNY Maritime College on Saturday.

Heidi DeHaan and Nicole Daigle tallied two goals apiece. Nicolette Greene, Shannon Martin and Jessica O’Sullivan each added a goal. Kat Rothe made four saves to earn the shutout for the Huskies.

Alicia Schmidt made eight saves on 29 shots for SUNY Maritime.

Lesley 4, Thomas 0

At Waterville, Jodi Fralick tallied two goals to propel Lesley University by Thomas College.

Lindsay Gove made 12 saves for the 0-1 Terriers.

Field hockey

Maine 2, Sacred Heart 1

At Storrs, Conn., Kelly Newton scored two goals Sunday, including the game-winner at the 57:54 mark, to spark the University of Maine to a season-opening 2-1 field hockey victory over Sacred Heart.

Brittany Fleck made two saves on nine shots for the Black Bears.

Whitney Mills stopped 11 of 23 shots for 0-2 Sacred Heart.

Men’s soccer

Maine 1, Adelphi 0

At Durham, N.H., Dimitri Anastasiou scored at 25:43 off an assist from Thomas McCole to lead Maine past Adelphi University Sunday in the University of New Hampshire Classic.

Nemanja Kostic made six saves on 22 shots for the 1-1 Black Bears.

Vincent Treglia stopped four of 12 shots for 0-2 Adelphi.

W. New England 3, Husson 2

At Norton, Mass., Dale Totman scored two goals and assisted on the third to power Western New England College past Husson College of Bangor on Saturday in the Kick-Off Classic at Wheaton College.

Tyler Metevier scored for Husson off a Billy Shannon assist. Jeff Truchon added a goal for the Eagles off a pass from Aaron Woodman.

UNE 1, MMA 0 (OT)

At Biddeford, Owen Evans netted the game’s only goal 3:06 into overtime Saturday to lift the University of New England past Maine Maritime Academy of Castine.

Elia Del Molino grabbed an assist on the winning goal. Derek Poulin stopped the only shot he faced for the Nor’easters.

Randy Bartlett made four saves for Maine Maritime.

USM 2, Colby-Sawyer 1

At Babson Park, Mass., Ben Slagle scored the game-winning goal with 8:33 left in the game to lead the University of Southern Maine of Gorham by Colby-Sawyer College in the Babson Classic on Saturday.

Peter McHugh scored the first goal for the 1-0 Huskies. David Kreps made two saves on six shots.

Chris Feltes stopped 16 of 27 shots for 0-1 Colby-Sawyer of New London, N.H.

Thomas 2, Lesley 0

At Waterville, Tim Costa netted both goals to power Thomas College by Lesley University.

Matt Mitchell recorded the assist on Costa’s first goal. Keegan Curtin stopped all six shots he faced to earn the shutout for the 1-0 Terriers.

Southern Maine 3, Wentworth 3

At Babson Park, Mass., the University of Southern Maine of Gorham rallied from a two-goal deficit to gain a 3-3, double-overtime draw with Wentworth Institute of Technology in the Babson Classic on Sunday.

Sinisa Bajic, Greg Cox and Peter McHugh each scored a goal. David Kreps made seven saves on 21 shots for the 1-0-1 Huskies.

Joe Simon stopped seven of 21 shots for 0-1-1 Wentworth.
