Shutdown not needed at Rumford paper mill

RUMFORD – Papermaker NewPage Corp. says a planned two-week shutdown at its Rumford mill this fall won’t be necessary after all.

Mill spokesman Tony Lyons said a review of inventory and orders showed that the two weeks were needed for production.

The company had announced in mid-August that all three paper machines, the pulp mill and the pulp dryer would be shut down Sept. 22 through Oct. 6.

Lyons said the change in plans is good news for those who would not have been working. The shutdown would have affected 500 employees, but some of them would have taken vacation during that time.
