Bicyclists injured after falling while riding in Acadia park

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK – Two people were injured Saturday, one seriously, after they fell off the bicycles they were riding.

Ranger Richard Reckholtz said Monday that around 8 a.m. the man and woman, who were not identified by park officials, were riding bikes down the Summit Road at Cadillac Mountain.

The woman biker, described as being in her 40s, was in the lead.

“She lost control and fell,” Reckholtz said. “The second bike, a male in the back [also in his 40s], then fell also because of the person falling in front of him.”

Park rangers and the Bar Harbor Ambulance went to the accident scene. The cyclists were taken to Mount Desert Island Hospital suffering from multiple injuries. The woman later was transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Reckholtz said her injuries were more serious.

The ranger said the two were experienced bikers and were wearing helmets.

“It was an unfortunate accident and we’re not 100 percent sure of what caused it,” he said.

The two remained hospitalized Monday.

The incident remains under investigation.
