CALAIS – An 18-year-old Calais man who was charged last month in connection with a break-in at a gun store in Columbia has been arrested and jailed on charges of violating conditions of release.
Aaron Flood remained in the Washington County Jail on Monday.
Around 11 p.m. Aug. 27, Calais police Officer David Claroni was on bicycle patrol on Main Street when he came upon Flood.
“Part of his bail conditions was no use or possession of any unlawful scheduled drugs, and search and seizure,” Sgt. Dave Randall said Monday. “He tested hot [positive] for a drug in his system.”
Flood was arrested.
The Calais man was one of four who were arrested in connection with a July break-in at the Four Corners Road and Gun Shop on Route 1 in Columbia. Also arrested were Jeffery S. Croman, 20, of Baileyville and brothers Chad E. Robinson, 23, and Joshua H. Robinson, 20, both of Charlotte.
All were charged with burglary and theft of firearms. Flood also was charged with aggravated criminal mischief.
A total of 12 guns were taken during the early morning break-in July 28. A gun case was smashed and the handguns were stolen. Two of the guns were recovered almost immediately and another was recovered a short time later.
Over the next few days, police recovered all but two of the guns.
The Sheriff’s Department has been aggressively seeking the remaining two handguns because of public safety concerns, Deputy Tom Chambers said Monday.
“We do suspect that the firearms may have been discarded in the woods or water and we would like to know where they are at so they can be accounted for and recovered,” he said.
There is a possibility someone may still have them, Chambers said. If that person turned them in to police it would be without serious repercussions.
“Obviously, we were successful with the other 10 guns that were recovered and we want to get these other two,” he said.
