There is great news for supporters of the FUTURE MSAD 3 Golf Tournament planned for Saturday, Sept. 13, at Country View Golf Club on Route 7 in Brooks.

And that news is the field of 18 teams is already full, Barrie Fernald wrote.

Having a full field this early has not occurred before, she continued.

“We think it is due to our lower price; the car that Dutch’s in Belfast is offering for a hole-in-one, and most importantly, that we are dedicating the tournament” to the late Country View Golf Course co-owner Carl Brown, who died unexpectedly in May.

The FUTURE MSAD 3 board voted unanimously to dedicate the tournament to Brown, whom they considered “a great friend to our organization” and one who “helped us every step of the way with this event over the past four years,” Fernald wrote.

“By dedicating this tournament to his memory,” the group can say “thank you to Carl and his family,” she added.

All that remains now is completing the field of hole sponsors “at the reduced price of $50,” Fernald wrote. The sponsoring business or family name will be displayed at a hole on the course.

“This is FUTURE MSAD 3’s biggest annual fundraiser, and we are excited to host a full house of players.”

Proceeds benefit the campaign for athletic facilities for the new Mt. View school.

Ronda Dalton, owner of Central Maine Wireless, a U.S. Cellular agent, invites children and adults to attend a safety day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at its Broadway Shopping Center location in Bangor.

Members of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department will conduct iris scans on children, which will be contributed to the nationwide Children’s Identification and Location Database to assist in locating and identifying missing children. Firefighters from Bangor’s Station 6 will speak with attendees and teach children about firefighting equipment.

The event also includes activities and prizes for children.

Jodi Freedman of the Alzheimer’s Association Maine Chapter reports “it is not too late” for people to register for the Alzheimer’s Association 2008 statewide fall conference, “Meeting the Challenges of Dementia: Enhancing Skills, Enriching Lives.”

The conference is 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Spectacular Event Center, 395 Griffin Road, Bangor.

Kevin Sjoberg e-mailed that the second annual Cornerstone Classic Golf tournament, a three-person scramble with a shotgun start, begins 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Caribou Country Club.

The fee is $30 per golfer or $90 per team, and includes a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, net and gross prizes, closest-to-the-pin prizes and a prize for every golfer.

Proceeds benefit Cornerstone Christian Academy, a nondenominational Christian school in Presque Isle.

WLBZ 2 has announced this year’s recipients of the 2 Those Who Care Awards, which will be presented Oct. 2, at the Webber Campus Center at Husson College in Bangor.

The awards were developed by WLBZ 2 in partnership with the United Way of Eastern Maine and are sponsored by Merrill Bank and Webber Energy Fuels.

Irv Marsters will receive the UWEM John W. Coombs volunteer recognition award, and Bangor Area Visiting Nurses will be honored with the Agency of Distinction Award.

This year’s honorees include Edwin Clift, chairman of St. Joseph Healthcare Foundation board of trustees, who serves in many other community leadership positions; and firefighter training-educator Donald R. Curtis Jr.

Nelson Durgin, who serves on many committees, boards and coalitions relating to elder safety and health, will be honored along with Kristin Hutchins, who counts service with Next Step Domestic Violence Project in Hancock and Washington counties among her many community activities and interests. Joseph Perry, president of the Greater Bangor Area National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, will also be honored.
