BANGOR – A Moosehead Boulevard man who yelled at a passing speeder was injured Monday afternoon after the driver allegedly backed up his car and hit him.

Anthony McGilvray Jr., 21, of Dixmont apparently was speeding down Moosehead Boulevard about 4:30 p.m. when a 28-year-old man yelled at him about his driving, police Lt. Jeff Millard said Tuesday.

The victim was concerned for the safety of his children and others in the neighborhood, court documents say.

McGilvray allegedly brought his 2008 Chevy Cobalt to a stop, then backed up to hit the victim, who was hurled onto the back of the car, then thrown to the ground when McGilvray sped away.

“It was a purposeful strike,” police Sgt. Bob Bishop said.

Three witnesses who said they were drawn outside by the speeding yellow car saw it back up and hit the victim, court documents say. McGilvray apparently also left a 90-foot-long strip of black rubber on the road near Rangeley Place, witnesses said.

The victim was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday that she had no information about his condition. The man was walking around after being hit, holding his side, court documents said.

Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies found McGilvray at his mother’s house in Dixmont. He was charged with aggravated assault, driving to endanger, operating after suspension, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

McGilvray’s passenger, a 21-year-old Bangor woman, was the owner of the car. At first she denied that McGilvray was the driver, but later changed her story.

McGilvray was taken to Penobscot County Jail and appeared Tuesday in 3rd District Court in Bangor, where his bail was set at $250 cash. He remained in jail Tuesday evening a jail official said.

McGilvray has a long criminal history that dates to when he was 15 and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. In December 2002, a judge ordered that he pay a $100 fine for that offense.

Over the years, he also has been convicted of criminal mischief, violating condition of release, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, a minor possessing liquor, and for the sale, use of drug paraphernalia, according to court reports published in the Bangor Daily News.
