ORONO – With groundbreaking for the new Orono Public library planned for this fall, many committees working to build the library are busy completing every last detail. From windows to flooring and shelving to lighting, all plans are getting a final review.
In the course of its fundraising campaign, the Orono Public Library Foundation has offered donors the opportunity to choose from a list of building items or areas to be named in someone’s honor or memory for gifts of $20,000 or more. The foundation very much appreciates that many of these named gifts have been selected in recent months.
The library will include a children’s wing named for Katherine Miles Durst and a multipurpose room honoring Dana and Mary Ann Devoe for their generous contributions to the campaign. The main circulation desk will be a gift of Marion and Harold Chute and the children’s circulation desk a gift of the PPL Corp.
Several special areas within the Durst Children’s Wing will bear the names of Alma and Fred Otto, the Old Town-Orono Kiwanis and Wayne Hamilton.
The new library will include several reading areas which will be designated in memory of Constance Hunting, James Horan, Heather Macmillan and Michael Round. There will be a World Travel Area sponsored by Harry and Charlotte Treworgy and a Blueberry Garden in honor of Alice and Charles Smith.
Local organizations to be recognized for contributions to the campaign include the Friends of the Orono Public Library, who will provide furnishings for the Devoe Multi-Purpose Room. The Orono Bicentennial Committee is sponsoring a special dictionary stand.
Fundraising for the new library is ongoing and gifts of any amount will be greatly appreciated. To make a contribution or to see a complete list of naming opportunities, visit www.oronolibraryfoundation.org/giving.
