Youngsters sought for Bangor children’s choir

Director Michele Hall has announced Bangor Area Children’s Choir auditions will be held 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 540 Essex St., Bangor.

Singers passing this audition return for a group audition from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the same site.

BACC consists of the training Choir and the advanced Youth Chorale, and accepts members regardless of race, creed, national origin or religious persuasion.

Organized in 1992 and not affiliated with any church or public school, Hall wrote that last year’s members “represented 12 towns and 17 schools” in the Bangor area.

The choir “is composed of all treble voices,” Hall explained of children with “unchanged voices” who are no younger than 9 as of Dec. 1, 2008, and no older than 16 as of Oct. 1.

The chorale is for children 12 and older with choral singing experience. In April, chorale members will participate in the Heritage Music Festival in New York City.

A benefit barbecue for John Landry, who is at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, recovering from a stroke, is planned for 3 p.m. until dark Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Junction General in Brownville Junction, wrote Edward Grant.

You are asked to “bring your own lawn chairs” for this event, at which Gary Grant will entertain with karaoke.

Lehan “Pete” Edwards of Pembroke and members of the Fundy Audubon Chapter of Maine Audubon invite you to the Fundy Audubon annual meeting and potluck supper and program at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Cobscook Community Learning Center on Route 189, “just one mile off U.S. Route 1,” Edwards wrote.

“The supper and program are open to the public. Just bring your favorite dish (casserole, dessert or salad) and we will have a scrumptious meal.”

The guest speaker is Will Hopkins, founder and executive director of the Cobscook Bay Resource Center in Eastport.

“Cobscook Bay is the one, real good scallop bay in New England,” Edwards wrote, “and it nearly collapsed a few years ago.

“The fishermen of the center chose to set limits on their catch, and this regional, local limit saved the fishery.

“This system differs from the federal day limits, and has proven to be a good tool to attain a sustainable fishery of scallops.

“The presentation will be interesting, and we will all benefit, because of our interest in the well-being of this unique Cobscook Bay.”

Hammond Street Senior Center executive director Kathy Bernier invites the public to view its Art Exhibit, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, now through Sept. 26, at 2 Hammond St.

Bernier reports HSSC members and instructors “have filled the three floors” of the facility “with a wonderful exhibit of their artwork.”

The work features “oil paintings, watercolors, acrylics, pottery, jewelry, baskets and quilts,” including “pre-Columbian style whistles and pouring vessels, Japanese-inspired pieces, mixing and serving bowls and decorative works.”

A benefit baked bean and casserole supper is planned for Stanley and Laura Joyce at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Deer Isle Grange Hall.

Miriam Black e-mailed that Laura Joyce has been hospitalized for some time, and “they need our help right now.”

Black then invites you to “drive on down … for a County Show and Auction starring Dave Taylor, Wade Dow and their friends.”

The show begins at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall, and door prizes will be offered.

Janelle Wuoristo of Maine Kids-Kin reminds readers the Maine Summit for Grandfamilies: The Law, Kinship and Children, begins with registration at 8:15 a.m. and opens at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Jewett Hall Auditorium at the University of Maine in Augusta.
