Stearns tips MA in 6 OT Brunswick holds off Bangor Rams

LINCOLN – Kurt Hamilton’s 10-yard run on a reverse play on first down in the sixth overtime period gave Stearns of Millinocket an 18-12 LTC Class C football victory over Mattanawcook Academy on Friday night.

Corey Barnett had an outstanding game for the unbeaten Minutemen, who were held to negative yardage through the first three quarters. He scored on a 4-yard run in the second overtime and finished with 12 tackles.

Nate Ireland led the Lynx with 15 tackles, an interception and two blocked extra-point kicks. Josh Pelkey threw two touchdown passes for the Lynx, who were unable to cash in on three drives inside the 20-yard line in regulation.

Brunswick 20, Bangor 12

At Brunswick, Robbie Basquez passed for one touchdown and rushed for a second as the Dragons held on after jumping out to a 20-0 halftime lead.

Basquez hit Robbie Schrader with a 9-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give 1-1 Brunswick a 7-0 lead, then scored on a 3-yard run to cap off a short drive set up by a pass interception by Eric Harris to extend the margin to 14-0.

John Williams added a 6-yard run late in the second quarter for Brunswick.

Bangor rallied in the second half, with Joe Seccareccia passing 15 yards to tight end Josiah Hartley for a third-quarter score, and Adam Billings scoring from 3 yards out in the fourth quarter to get the Rams within eight points.

The Rams (1-1) had one final drive in the fourth quarter, but a late interception thwarted the threat.

Shaun Tanner led Brunswick’s offense, rushing for more than 100 yards for the second straight week.

Bucksport 33, MCI 18

At Carmichael Field in Bucksport, Nate Warren carried 20 times for 206 yards with two touchdowns and a conversion rush in three quarters of action as the Golden Bucks held off the stubborn Huskies.

Warren scored on runs of 18 and 45 yards for Bucksport, which led by three points at intermission and blanked Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield the rest of the way.

Alex Giosia rushed for 97 yards on 19 carries, including a 5-yard scoring run, for the Bucks while Andrew Findlay netted 58 yards on 12 carries with a 2-yard TD run.

Kyle McGeechan turned in a 1-yard scoring run and tackle Robbie McGuire registered eight tackles, including a sack, for the winners.

Nick Miller paced the Huskies with a 2-yard TD run and a 77-yard kickoff return that got MCI within 21-18 at halftime. Brandon Wilson raced 40 yards for a score during the Huskies’ 18-point second quarter.

At Rockland, Sam Weiss scored five touchdowns – all in the first half – and finished with 239 yards on 22 carries to lead the host Tigers past Mount View of Thorndike.

Donald Prescott gained 40 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown in his first varsity action for the Tigers. Cornerback Tyler Fogg had an interception and two fumble recoveries.

Tyler Rednour had 40 yards on six carries for the Mustangs, who were held to 130 total yards – 117 on the ground.

Skowhegan 50, Mount Ararat 7

At Skowhegan, Billy Clark scored on his team’s first possession with a 67-yard run and scored on the first possession of the second half with a 74-yard run to lead the Skowhegan Indians past Mount Ararat of Topsham.

Clark finished with four touchdowns and 235 yards on 19 carries for the Indians. Cody Vigue had 46 yards on nine carries and also had a 22-yard interception return. Dustin Corson scored on two, two-point conversion rushes and also had an interception return.

Drew Marshall led the Eagles with 46 yards on 10 carries.
