Estabrook lifts Rams by Witches

BREWER – Bangor High School junior striker Eliza Estabrook collected her first high school hat trick Saturday afternoon.

And it didn’t take very long.

Estabrook scored her three goals in the first 12 minutes as the Rams used an eight-goal first half to cruise to a 10-1 schoolgirl soccer victory over rival Brewer.

Bangor improved to 2-1 while Brewer fell to 0-3.

“It was important to go out hard [from the start]. We weren’t going to take them lightly,” said Estabrook. “We did a lot of really good give-and-gos. We got open and that creates space in the middle. It wasn’t so congested[in the penalty area],” said Estabrook.

Estabrook opened the scoring two minutes into the game off an M.J. Boyce pass.

“It was a real good give-and-go,” said Estabrook. “I just had to take a touch, get around [a defender] and get a shot off.”

Estabrook’s rising shot from 10 yards out sailed over the hands of goalie Hannah Simmons.

Five minutes later, she accepted another Boyce pass in the penalty area and struck a shot with good pace that deflected in off the gloves of Simmons.

Boyce said she and Estabrook have been “playing together our whole lives so we know where each other is most of the time.”

Denlai Graham fed Estabrook for her third goal in the middle of the area.

“That was another really good pass right in front and I just had to tap it in again,” said Estabrook, whose shot again deflected in off the gloves of the helpless Simmons.

Graham said they have focused on give-and-gos in practice “and that’s how we penetrated their defense.”

Shannon Brozyna directed in a loose ball from a scramble and Kate Freudenberger made it 5-0 when she used her instep to direct a Sadie Redman pass inside the far post from 10 yards out.

Brewer’s Faith Thomas converted a breakaway and Katie McLaughlin generated another breakaway a few minutes later only to have Bangor goalie Kortnie Hudgens come out to cut down the angle and get her hands on her shot.

After a Ram was tripped in the penalty area, Boyce converted from the penalty spot to make it 6-1 and goals by Hanna Colpritt and Jenny Leach from goal-mouth scrambles closed out the half.

Jade Baumrind and Chelsea Pratt added second-half goals.

Bangor had 58 shots at goal to Brewer’s 13.

Hudgens had one save on four shots in the first half for Bangor before freshman Mia Smith stopped five of nine shots in the second half.

Simmons made three saves and allowed four goals in the first half before Colleen Gilley came on and made three more stops while allowing the other four goals.

Simmons made 11 saves on 25 shots in the second half.

“It was a learning experience for us,” said Brewer coach Bill Schwarz. “We’ve got a very young team. Bangor’s good. They did a great job. They scored early and often.”

“They’re good. They worked the ball around well,” said Brewer senior midfielder Sheri Valley who added that the early goals “definitely” hurt them.

Bangor coach Joe Johnson said his team “did a lot of things well today” and he also praised Brewer for “playing hard right to the end.”
