People whose lives have been affected by suicide are invited to participate in a walk to raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
The 5K Out of the Darkness walk will take place Sunday, Sept. 28, at Hayford Park in Bangor. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and the walk will start at 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit local and national suicide prevention and awareness programs.
The event also provides an opportunity for those who have been affected by a loved one’s suicide to meet others with similar experiences.
In Maine, on average, one person commits suicide every two days, and there are two attempted suicides every day. Suicide is second only to car accidents as a leading cause of death in 15- to 24-year-olds, responsible for approximately 25 to 30 deaths in young people in Maine each year.
