ORONO – A fifth-year University of Maine student faces burglary and other charges after he allegedly broke into a house on Crosby Street on Thursday night.
Orono police Sgt. Scott Scripture said Orono resident Keith Clairmont, 22, who had been arrested the week before for disorderly conduct, also was charged with criminal trespass and violation of conditional release. Information about the previous charge was not immediately available Monday.
Clairmont broke into the home at about 10:40 p.m. Sept. 11, according to the incident report.
A woman in the bedroom at the time told police she heard noises outside her bedroom window and moments later heard a crashing noise in the living room. The woman told police she went into the living room where she saw an air-conditioning unit had been removed from a window and Clairmont standing in the room.
The woman screamed, according to the report, and Clairmont tried to leave through the window. She told him to go out the front door, which he did, the report said.
The woman called the police and gave them a description of Clairmont, including a Ralph Lauren T-shirt he was wearing. Orono police called for a dog from the Old Town Police Department to track the suspect.
Meanwhile, Scripture said, Orono police Officer Chris Foxworthy came upon Clairmont in the parking lot of the University Credit Union branch on Park Street.
Foxworthy realized Clairmont matched the description of the Crosby Street intruder, and also noticed Clairmont was visibly intoxicated and unsteady on his feet.
While Foxworthy was talking to Clairmont in the credit union parking lot, the Old Town dog tracked Clairmont to where he was standing with the officer, police said.
Clairmont was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where a breath test determined he had a blood alcohol level of 0.21 percent, according to police. Before Clairmont was taken to jail, the woman identified him as the man in her apartment.
Clairmont was still in jail Monday evening and is scheduled to appear today at Penobscot County District Court in Bangor.
