Johnston’s 2nd goal lifts Calais to victory MDI, DI-Stonington boys earn shutout wins

WOODLAND – Jeff Johnston scored two goals, including the game-winning goal with 8:44 left in the game as Calais edged Woodland 3-2 in a schoolboy soccer game Wednesday.

Ben Pagels netted a goal and grabbed an assist while Ryan Cavanaugh and Scott Cavanaugh each had an assist for 1-1 Calais. Jordan Leeman stopped 16 of 18 shots for the Blue Devils.

Brad Arthers and Chad James each scored a goal for Woodland. Andy Brown and Scott Boomer each recorded an assist. Ryan Lincoln made 22 saves on 25 shots for the 3-2 Dragons.

MDI 4, George Stevens 0

At Blue Hill, Abe Gladstone’s hat trick powered Mount Desert Island past George Stevens.

Matt Weber added a goal for the 3-1 Trojans while Corey Hodgkins recorded seven saves on nine shots to post the shutout.

Josh Gale and Nate Hines combined for three saves on 13 shots for 2-3 George Stevens.

DI-Stonington 5, Jones-Beals 0

At Jonesport, the Mariners erupted for five second-half goals to defeat Jonesport-Beals.

Joe Carter registered a hat trick while Nathan Joyce and Blake Bartlett added a goal apiece for 2-2 Deer Isle-Stonington. Eben Powers came away with 14 saves on 16 shots.

Sid Look and Travis Haley combined for 21 saves on 30 shots for the 0-4 Royals.

Dexter 1, Penquis 0

At Dexter, Andrew Lary scored with 1:05 remaining in the game off an assist from Ryan Wilks to lift Dexter past Penquis of Milo.

Nathan Wyman stopped 13 of 19 shots for the 3-0-2 Tigers.

Richie Russell made 15 saves on 41 shots for Penquis.

Central 2, Penobscot Valley 0

At Corinth, Cole Haskell made 17 saves on 20 shots for Central as the Red Devils shut out Penobscot Valley of Howland.

Ryan Bean and David Lord each netted a goal while Joey Brown and Lord each had an assist for 2-1-2 Central.

Jacob Jones stopped 18 of 26 shots for the 3-1-1 Howlers.

JV: PVHS 4-0

Lee Academy 4, Schenck 2

At East Millinocket, Carston Kaiser netted four goals to power Lee Academy by Schenck.

A.J. Harris made eight saves on 13 shots for the 1-4 Pandas.

Aaron Hutchins tallied both goals for Schenck with an assist going to Chris Ouellette. Jerome York stopped 13 of 22 shots for the 0-4-1 Wolverines.

JV: Schenck 3-0

Foxcroft 4, PCHS 4 (2OT)

At Dover-Foxcroft, Kim Kim’s goal with 30:32 left in the second half rallied the Ponies to a tie with Piscataquis of Guilford.

Diego de la Torre had two goals and an assist for 0-4-1 Foxcroft, while Kyo Mikame had a goal and an assist.

Kyle Steeves netted two goalsfor 1-3-2 Piscataquis, while Brian Hackett and Damian Bridge each added a goal. Kyle Curtis posted an assist for the Pirates.

Alex Gray made five saves on 10 shots for Foxcroft, while Corbin Shufelt made five saves on 17 shots.

JV: Piscataquis 4-0

Girls soccer

Bangor 7, Skowhegan 0

At Bangor Tuesday night, Denali Graham and Annie McKay each scored two goals as the Rams rolled.

Chelsea Pratt, Kendra Lenz and Erin Dean each added a goal.

Southern Aroostook 3, Ashland 0

At Dyer Brook, Janel Rockwall knocked in two goals while Emily Cummings and Mallary Lawlor pitched a shutout in goal as the Warriors defeated Ashland.

Liz Goodall assisted on one of Rockwall’s goals while scoring one of her own for 7-0 Southern Aroostook. Cummings and Lawlor combined for 10 saves on 14 shots.

Taylor Baker blocked eight of 15 shots for 6-1-1 Ashland.

Madawaska 1, Fort Kent 0

At Madawaska, Susan Lavertu scored an unassisted goal with 18 minutes to play in the first half as Madawaska tripped up Fort Kent.

Stephanie Nadeau recorded 23 saves on 25 shots for the 6-3 Owls.

Carissa Pelletier stopped four of seven shots for the 6-2-1 Warriors.

JV: Fort Kent 4-1

Field hockey

Orono 2, Hermon 0

At Hermon, Amy Mares’ first-half goal provided the only scoring the Red Riots would need to beat the Hawks.

Veronica Wallace-Ewing scored off a Chelsea Wagner assist for 2-3 Orono. Amber Saucier made four saves on 12 shots.

Jamie Roy made five stops on seven shots for 2-3 Hermon.

JV: Orono 2-1

Central 2, Old Town 1

At Old Town, Sam Blanchard scored the game-winning goal with 2:00 remaining in the game off a penalty stroke to lift Central of Corinth past Old Town.

Berta Trafton scored the first goal for Central off a pass from Katrina Lessard. Brittany Cote stopped 27 of 28 shots for the 3-2 Red Devils.

Lindsay St. Louis scored for Old Town off an assist from Sarah Wilcox. Heather Nye and Danyle Boobar combined to make seven saves on nine shots for the 3-2 Coyotes.

JV: 0-0
