Women’s studies lunch series schedule announced

ORONO – The University of Maine Women in the Curriculum and Women’s Studies Program Fall 2008 Lunch Series is scheduled for 12:15-1:30 p.m. in the Bangor Room, Memorial Union, University of Maine:

. Tuesday, Sept. 23, “What Did the American Revolution Mean for White Women?,” Liam Riordan, associate professor of history.

. Tuesday, Sept. 30, Somali Narrative Project’s Research on Women, Kim Huisman, assistant professor, sociology; Kristin Langellier, professor, communication and journalism.

. Wednesday, Oct 8, “Perspectives on Family Care-Giving: Experiences of Adult Daughters,” Sandy Butler, professor of social work; Martha A. Eastman, care manager, Pro-Elder Consulting, LLC; Renate Klein, associate professor of human development and family studies; and Martha Proulx, district operations manager, Maine Department of Health and Human Services.

. Wednesday, Oct. 15, “In the Shadow of the Eagle: Representing the Penobscot Nation in the State Legislature,” Donna Loring, Penobscot representative to the Maine Legislature. Talk and book signing.

Wednesday, Oct. 22, “Beyond Hotline and Shelter: Spruce Run Addresses Barriers to Safety for People Affected by Abuse,” Maureen Flagg, transitional housing and family systems coordinator; Ruth Jewell, Penobscot Nation & Northern Penobscot County advocacy coordinator; Shelley Megquier, child protective initiative coordinator; Suzanne Saunders-Barrett, lawyer. Part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

. Wednesday, Oct. 29, “The Power of Storytelling in Maithil Women’s Tales,” Coralynn Davis, research associate-visiting faculty, Women’s Studies in Religion, Harvard University.

. Tuesday, Nov. 4, “Maine’s Budget Crisis and How It Affects Real Women,” Francine Stark, training coordinator, Spruce Run; Shawn Yardley, director, city of Bangor Health and Community Services; Nicole Witherbee, federal budget analyst, Maine Center for Economic Policy.

. The 23rd annual Maryann Hartman Awards to Maine Women of Achievement, 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, Buchanan Alumni House.

. Tuesday, Nov. 11, “Mongol Women and Children as Cornerstones of the New Empire,” Gulnara Abikeeva, Kazakhstan Fulbright scholar, Bowdoin College; and film critic Jane Knox-Voina, chairwoman, Russian department and Eurasian and East European Studies Program, Bowdoin College.
