HERMON – The Ellsworth girls soccer team flew out to a fast start Thursday evening, scoring two goals in the first 32 minutes, cruising from there to a 4-1 Class B victory over Hermon at the high school field.
Coach Jen Myers’ Eagles went into attack mode early and often, generating 31 shots at goal while their aggressive back line limited the Hawks to only three shots.
“Our defense has really come together the past couple games. This was like a confidence booster,” said senior left striker Maggie Harding, who along with stopper Kara Beal, sweeper Ashley Cloak and fullbacks Lily Cooper and Darien Lewis were stout in limiting Hermon’s penetration beyond the midfield.
The Eagles improved to 4-0 on the young season while Hermon dipped to 2-3.
Eagles starting goalkeeper Angie Tucker left the game after the first half, as she sustained a concussion, according to Myers.
“It is definitely a concussion and hopefully not a real serious one,” said Myers.
Tucker was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for further evaluation.
Casey Wyman put Ellsworth on the board at the 21-minute mark, as her low, curling shot deflected off Hermon ‘keeper Danielle Ross, while Lauren Peer scored the first of her two goals seven minutes later.
The senior center-midfielder dribbled steadily around Hermon’s defenders, and when Ross came out too far, Peer tucked the ball inside the right goalpost to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
“The goal was open because the goalie tried to make a save outside the 18, so I just dropped it into the corner,” said Peer, who broke down the left wing and beat Ross to the left post with 9:02 left in regulation to cap the scoring.
Clarissa Winkelmann added a second-half tally for the Eagles, one-touching home a crisp cross from McKenzy Manheim.
“We were dominating, that was awesome. Our passes [were tight] like a sewing needle, it was awesome,” Harding said.
Lindsey Allen booted home a cross from Kasey Fratini with 9:31 left in the first to put the Hawks on the board, but that was the best scoring chance coach Ben Poland’s club had all night.
“It took us a while to get into the game. We’ve had problems with that every game, coming out flat in the first half,” Poland said.
Ellsworth’s back line did a solid job of putting pressure on Hermon’s midfielders and forwards, limiting crossing passes and any penetration into the penalty area.
“I think the defense just did a great job of putting pressure on them right away, not allowing them to carry the ball down to the 18,” said Myers.
Taylor Trombley didn’t have to make a save on the only Hermon shot in the second half while Tucker had one save on two first-half shots for the Eagles.
Ross came up with 13 saves for Hermon.
