WALDOBORO – A 16-year-old boy died early Friday after the all-terrain vehicle he was operating collided with a truck on Back Cove Road the previous evening.
Kenneth Carter of Waldoboro was pronounced dead of massive head injuries at Maine Medical Center in Portland at 2:52 a.m. Friday.
At 4:51 p.m. Thursday, Sgt. Jamie Wilson of the Waldoboro Police Department responded to a report of two ATVs racing up and down the Back Cove Road, according to a police department press release. While en route at 4:59 p.m. to the area of the original complaint, Wilson received a call from the Lincoln County Dispatch Center of a car and ATV accident with injuries on Back Cove Road.
Wilson reported that Peter Wincapaw, 58, of Waldoboro was traveling west in his 2000 Ford pickup truck when he was struck on the passenger side front bumper by an ATV with two occupants as it exited Gergely Lane.
A second red ATV was directly behind the first one in the accident, the police report said. The operator of the second ATV fled the scene immediately after the accident.
The Waldoboro Police Department is looking for the operator.
Carter and his 17-year-old passenger were taken to Miles Hospital Emergency Room. Carter was later transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he died as a result of his injuries.
Wincapaw was not injured.
