Greenville panel backs Plum Creek

GREENVILLE – Selectmen signed a resolution this week supporting Plum Creek’s amended 30-year plan for its land in the Moosehead Lake region.

While selectmen voted in January to support the plan, Town Manager John Simko believed a resolution would send a stronger message of the plan’s significance to the region as the state Land Use Regulation Commission holds two days of deliberative sessions.

Those sessions will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23 and Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Ramada Inn in Bangor, and is expected to be followed by a recommendation from LURC to Plum Creek.

The Seattle-based timber company, which is the nation’s largest landowner, wants approval to build 975 house lots and two large resorts over time on about 20,000 acres in the Unorganized Territory in the Moosehead Lake region. Even if LURC approved the concept plan, Plum Creek would be required to get LURC approval for each subdivision or resort before starting construction. LURC serves as the planning board for the Unorganized Territory.

Simko said the town has studied the proposal in depth and that town officials have attended many meetings held across the state on the matter, including local public hearings.

“This elected board feels the plan is good for the region,” Simko said Thursday.

The resolution notes that selectmen believe the timber company’s resource plan for the parcel in the Moosehead Lake region was devised with great care and consideration for the economic needs of Greenville and the region it serves.

This resource plan “threads together development opportunities for Plum Creek and also conservation lands for the general public while adding great security and predictability for both forest products and outdoor recreational activities,” the resolution says.

The document, which was forwarded to LURC, mentions that the plan calls for the permanent easement of snowmobile trails and non-motorized recreational trails, as well as diverse recreational opportunities. It also notes the company had initiated a project to develop affordable housing within the region.
