Runners and walkers alike are invited Sunday to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure along the Bangor Waterfront.
The race, which starts at 10 a.m., raises awareness for breast cancer. Among its thousands of participants are some serious runners from the local circuit, local high school sports teams, breast cancer survivors and families and friends of victims.
The course is an out-and-back route in downtown, heading up Main Street, up Buck Street, around West Broadway and back down Buck Street.
In other words, you’re running the last mile of the Bangor Labor Day 5-mile race course in reverse.
Preregistration is strongly encouraged, with race-day fees set at $25 for adults and $17 for runners 18 and under.
Participants ran register at www.komenmaine.com and pick up their materials at the Bangor Mall from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, 4-7 Friday and noon-4 Saturday.
Preregistration fees are as follows: $20 for adults and $12 for 18-under online and $25 and $17 via mail-in registration.
Bar Harbor race set today
One of the country’s more scenic half marathons, the 31st annual Bar Harbor Bank and Trust Half Marathon will go off at 8:30 a.m. today, with walkers starting an hour earlier at 7:30.
This challenging course, part of which winds through the carriage trails of Acadia National Park, is USA Track and Field-certified while the race starts and finishes adjacent to the Mount Desert Island YMCA, just outside of downtown Bar Harbor.
Due to Acadia National Park restrictions, the race is capped at 400 participants, and registration for the half marathon is full.
Evan Graves and Joan Benoit Samuelson hold the respective course records.
Shower facilities are available to all runners at the conclusion of the race.
