A 14-year-old Bishop Road resident was burned when he apparently put a paint can into a fire and it exploded, a member of the Hermon Fire Department confirmed Sunday afternoon.

The extent of the burns and other details about the incident were unavailable Sunday evening. The firefighter said he was at the scene of the accident, but did not see the teen before he was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

A pilot flying a small plane over the Bangor-Brewer area around noon Sunday spotted what he believed to be a vehicle in the water near the Brewer side of the Penobscot River.

It was indeed a vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, Brewer police Sgt. David Lord said Sunday afternoon at the riverbank as the Jeep was being towed to Bangor by Union Street Citgo.

“It’s a stolen vehicle, reported about a year ago,” he said, indicating he had no clue how it got into the river. “They used well over 100 feet of cable” to retrieve it.

Butch Moore, a pilot with Down East Emergency Medicine Institute of Bangor, who also is a former Bangor police officer, was taking photos of the Komen Race for the Cure on the Bangor Waterfront when he noticed the Jeep.

He took an image and shared it with Brewer police.

Bangor Fire Department sent a small Zodiac boat to the scene and its crew marked the site with a buoy. A Maine State Police diver attached a cable so the vehicle could be towed out of the water.

The light-colored Jeep, which was covered with mud and rust, had a crushed roof. It was in the water behind B&L Auto Parts on South Main Street. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
