The Hampden Highlands Quilters will hold its quilt show 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Avalon Village Manor House, 50 Foxglove Drive, off Route 1A, Main Road North, in Hampden. Admission is a $3 donation.
Approximately 125 quilted items will be on display, including king-size quilts, baby quilts, wall hangings, table runners, and clothing.
Ellen Farrell, Sally Field and Irene Dysart, longtime Hampden residents and quilters, will display their work. Farrell is best known for her scrap quilts. Field designs and makes art quilts and has had work featured in national publications. Dysart is a traditional quilter. She displayed many of her quilts at her quilt shop in
Hampden when she ran that business.
Lianne Giambalvo will display quilts of her own design, “The Seven Days of Creation” in the library at the Manor House.
Donna Johnson will display original pieces she has created. Johnson hand dyes her own fabric using natural materials, which results in beautiful, earthy colors and design. Her work also will be displayed in the library.
Each of the rooms in the Manor House will feature quilts best suited to that room. Seasonal quilted items will be exhibited in the parlor. Quilted clothing, baby quilts and Round Robin quilts will be exhibited in the pool hall.
The larger quilts will be draped over railings. If the weather is nice, some items will be displayed outside on the deck.
The Hampden Highland Quilters participated in three projects last year. Ten members took part in the Round Robin challenge.
Another group did the Fabric Challenge in which they were given two fat quarters, with the option of adding up to three additional colors, but the quilt size could not exceed 36 inches square. These items will be on display in the pool hall.
The third challenge was called Stone Soup – participants drew six bags each with different amounts or kinds of fabrics in them. From the six bags, using only that material, they had to make a quilted item. These pieces will be displayed in the pool hall.
Also at the event, lengths of fabric, 21/2 inches wide and known as jelly rolls, and 41/2-inch-by-41/2-inch squares will be sold. Refreshments will be available.
Proceeds from the show will go toward charity projects that the quilt group sponsors.
