UNITY – A Unity College student has been charged with assaulting and terrorizing his female roommates earlier this month.
Adam M. Grella, 24, of Wallingford, Conn., was summoned on three counts of assault and one count of terrorizing as a result of the incidents that occurred at Flyrod Cottage on the college campus.
Waldo County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Bryant White said Grella had been assigned to a cottage with three female roommates for this semester. He said Grella would become abusive when drinking and would grab or push the females and scream and yell at them. Grella was described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 260 pounds.
The first assault allegedly took place at or about 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, followed by another at or about 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, and a third at or about 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. The terrorizing incident took place at or about 12:15 p.m. Friday, Sept 12.
The roommates eventually reported Grella’s behavior to the college and he was removed from the cottage. The sheriff’s department was informed and an investigation was launched.
“They moved him out of the cottage before we started the investigation,” White said Tuesday.
Unity College spokesman Mark Tardiff said Tuesday that the school dealt with the situation immediately and that Grella was no longer a current student.
“At Unity College, the safety of each of our students is a top priority. When this incident came to light appropriate steps were immediately taken by the offices of Public Safety and Residence Life,” Tardiff said Tuesday. “The appropriate authorities were involved and ongoing cooperation from Unity College administration continues as it has from the outset.”
Tardiff noted that because the matter now was in the hands of the authorities, the college could not comment on ongoing legal issues. He said the “alleged perpetrator” was no longer attending the college.
“We are taking every measure to support our current students,” Tardiff said. “We move forward with confidence in our campus community and a focus to maintain the positive environment that characterizes the Unity College experience.”
