Christina Mosher of Farmington, who had a solid freshman season for the University of Maine women’s basketball team last winter, has decided to leave the program.

Black Bears coach Cindy Blodgett confirmed Friday night that the sophomore post player decided this week that she did not wish to continue playing for UMaine.

“It’s a completely personal decision. It’s her decision,” said Blodgett, who would not provide any further details.

Mosher, a former standout at Mt. Blue High School, could not be reached for comment.

The 6-foot-2 Mosher appeared in 23 games last season, making four starts. She averaged 4.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per contest.

Mosher, a former BDN All-Maine second-team selection in 2007, was recruited by former UMaine coach Ann McInerney.

“We wish her well,” Blodgett said. “She’s a great, great kid and she loves her teammates and her teammates certainly loved her.”

Mosher’s departure leaves UMaine with only 10 players for the 2007-08 season. She is the fifth player to leave the team since the end of last season, joining Emily Rousseau of Biddeford, Sandra Vaitkute, Magdala Johnson and Brittany Bowen.

Rousseau transferred to Stonehill College, while Johnson is enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University. Both Division II schools are in the Northeast 10 Conference.

The Black Bears, who finished last season 7-23 (4-12 America East) will go into the season with a roster that includes four returning starters in senior Colleen Kilmurray and juniors Amanda Tewksbury, Brittany Boser and Kristin Baker of Bingham.

UMaine also welcomes back junior Katia Bratishko and sophomore Tanna Ross of Newburgh, along with freshmen Brittany Williams, Jasmine Rush, Samantha Wheeler and Samantha Baranowski.
