Pending inclement weather has forced the postponement of a number of high school sporting events throughout the state.

While a number of Friday’s high school football games went off without a hitch, today’s weather conditions are posing a problem for some local football, soccer, field hockey and cross country teams.

Stearns of Millinocket’s 2 p.m. football contest at Calais was postponed to Monday at 6 p.m. in Millinocket, while Oak Hill of Sabattus will travel to Winslow to face the Black Raiders on Monday at 3:30.

That game was originally scheduled for today at 1:30.

Today’s other football contests have Belfast traveling to Bath to face Morse at 7, Waterville hosting Gardiner at 1, Leavitt of Turner Center at Nokomis of Newport at 1:30 and Old Town facing Dexter.

A couple of cross country meets were wiped out. A six-team affair scheduled for Friday featuring Brewer, Lewiston, Monmouth Academy, Edward Little of Auburn and Lawrence of Fairfield at Leavitt was canceled.

Also, the Sectional Invitational in Old Town, slated to run today, was pushed back to Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

That meet will end up losing a couple of teams, according to Old Town coach Rod White, as the Lynx Invitational at Mattanawcook in Lincoln also is scheduled for Tuesday. Class B powers John Bapst of Bangor, Caribou and Mount Desert Island are all expected to contend at the Sectional.

“The weather’s kind of a bummer. The course was in pretty good shape – it could’ve taken a little bit of rain – but we’re worried about the wind and that stuff,” White said.

The postponement could also impact some teams’ preparation for next Saturday’s Maine Cross Country Festival of Champions in Belfast, as they’ll be looking at two meets in a five-day span.

“A coach wants to plan for things, train certain days, but you can’t control the weather,” White said. “We’re going to try again on Tuesday.”

He added that the safety of the runners is the primary concern.

The weather also affected some local soccer and field hockey matches.

The Brewer boys soccer team’s home game against Lawrence was switched to Wednesday at 3:30 at the Maple Street Field, while the Bangor boys will host Messalonskee of Oakland at 4 p.m. Monday.

The Brewer girls travel to Lawrence Wednesday at 4 while Brewer’s field hockey game in Topsham against Mount Ararat will commence Monday at 4.
