BANGOR – Bangor Public Works plans to accept household hazardous waste at its 530 Maine Ave. station Oct. 4.
The service will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The one-day program is open to residents of Bangor, Brewer, Carmel, Clifton, Dedham, Dixmont, Eddington, Etna, Glenburn, Hampden, Hermon, Holden, Kenduskeag, Milford, Newburgh, Old Town, Orono, Orrington, Penobscot Nation, Stockton Springs, Veazie and Winterport.
All who participate must bring a residential household hazardous waste product permit.
Bangor residents may obtain permits at either the Bangor city information desk in City Hall at 73 Harlow St. or Bangor Public Works until noon Friday, Oct. 3. Residents from other participating towns should contact their town offices for details for registration and necessary permits.
To obtain a permit, each person will need a proof of residence and a detailed list of the types of materials and quantities that will be brought to the collection. If a person does not preregister for a permit, a $10 fee will be assessed on the day of the collection.
Residents may bring a maximum of 15 gallons of waste, one computer, one monitor, one keyboard and one television to the collection. Participants should bring products labeled “caution, poison, toxic, flammable, pesticide, warning, combustible and-or danger.”
Oil-based paint must be in its original container with labels attached. Secondary containers for all products must be clearly marked with contents and be in a securely closed container. Residents should place their containers in cardboard boxes and transport the containers to the Public Works Department at 530 Maine Ave. Trained attendants will unload the product containers from cars or trucks.
Latex paint will not be collected. Instead, allow the paint to dry and dispose of it in the regular trash. AA, AAA, C and D batteries also will not be collected. Rechargeable batteries, however, may be brought to the collection.
