BREWER – Washington Street School third-grade teacher Amy Reif has been selected by Brewer Wal-Mart Supercenter officials as the local Teacher of the Year for the Wal-Mart Foundation program.

Superintendent Daniel Lee applauded the selection.

“We’re really pleased,” he said Monday. “When Amy wins, we all kind of win. It’s a nice thing for Washington Street School and for her personally.”

Wal-Mart associates at 11 a.m. today will present Washington Street School a $1,000 educational grant and will give Reif a $100 gift card as part of the honor. Reif has been an elementary school teacher in Brewer since 1995.

In the 13 years that Wal-Mart has honored teachers nationwide, more than 30,000 educators have been given accolades.

“I appreciate Wal-Mart’s efforts to recognize teachers,” Lee said. When they honor local teachers, “we all win.”
